3 Things That Can Kill Your Lawn

Florida, as beautiful as it is, can be a severe hurdle for first-time homeowners. With a nickname of the “Sunshine State,” it’s fair to ask if the ever-present sun can damage your turf. Never have questions about Florida lawn care left unanswered by partnering with O’Hara and choosing our Lucky Lawn Care™ program

Florida Lawn Care

Sunlight and Shade

Too much or too little of anything is never good, and the same is valid for grass. Similar to certain flowers and plants, some grass species prefer moderate rays over constant sunlight.

Perhaps the reason you’ve had a hard time managing your lawn is that the previous owner seeded the wrong grass for the climate.

Other times, adjusting how much water shaded and sunlit areas receive can help your lawn cope with stress from too much or too little light.

How You Cut Your Grass

Many make the common mistake of cutting their grass too short, which starves the blades of energy. Did you know that grass doesn’t store energy in its roots but its stalks? So, hacking away 50% or more off at once can seriously impact its health, causing it to brown.

Sticking to the 1/3 rule (cutting off a third of the length at a time) isn’t always enough to ensure a healthy lawn. Using dull or compromised mower blades will shred individual blades of grass rather than cleanly slicing them. This will lead to the potential onset of diseases which will impact your lawn profoundly.

Fertilizing Techniques

Many of our pest control customers are surprised when we bring up lawn care, specifically fertilizing. While most associate gardens with fertilizers, your lawn will benefit all the same. Moreover, fertilizing your lawn will lead to:

  • Better growth
  • Improved air quality
  • Balanced soil pH
  • Healthy, green lawns
